UAE achieves breakthrough in sustainable aviation biofuels

Recently, the UAE has made breakthroughs in research on sustainable aviation biofuels and found that desert plants irrigated with saline can produce biofuels in a more efficient manner. Abu Dhabi’s “Sustainable Bioenergy Research Consortium” (SBRC) will test these findings. The head of the consortium, Rios, said that the study and related testing activities follow the “Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030” The principle is that its goal is to develop sustainable energy sources, diversify the UAE economy, and increase UAE job opportunities.

Currently, with funding from Boeing and other companies, SBRC is focusing on the development and commercialization of sustainable aviation biofuels. The SBRC study also found that the entire plant of mangrove shrubs can be converted to biofuels with higher efficiency than many other crops. Compared with fossil fuels, biofuels have 50% to 80% lower carbon emissions over the life cycle. The prospects of these haloplants for renewable energy sources in aircraft and automobiles exceeded expectations.

According to Rios, SBRC scientists will set up an experimental ecosystem next year to plant two kinds of halophytes in desertified soil in Abu Dhabi. Abandoned brines from fish farms and shrimp farms will be used to irrigate salted plants. Plants will grow while purifying water, after which water will flow into a mangrove forest and return to the ocean. Both plants can be converted into aviation biofuels through the application of SBRC's research results. He said that the United Arab Emirates has taken a leading position in the field of biofuel research, and these crops also have potential for application in other parts of the world.
