U.S. military purchases lithium ion battery energy storage system to equip next-generation electromagnetic guns

According to the China National Defense Science and Technology Information Network, the U.S. Offshore Systems Command has awarded K2 Energy a $81 million contract for the design of high-power energy storage systems for electromagnetic guns.

The electromagnetic gun is one of the largest scientific and technological projects invested by the US Naval Research Agency. It can launch large-range supersonic (Mach number greater than 7) cannonballs and strike targets at 200 nautical miles within 6 minutes.

High-power pulsed power technology is a key factor in the wide range of application of electromagnetic guns. The contract awarded by the United States Navy to K2 Energy indicated that it has now broken through this technology.

The lithium-ion battery energy storage system contract was awarded as early as July and is expected to complete the design in 2016. (China Ship Information Center Chen Xiao)
