New polymer can be used to detect mercury contamination

The mercury pollution caused by human activities mainly comes from industrial emissions such as chlor-alkali, plastics, batteries, and electronics, as well as waste medical equipment. Mercury pollution has become increasingly serious around the world, and many lakes and rivers have been contaminated with mercury. The treatment of mercury pollution requires a lot of manpower and material resources, and the repair and repair of it cannot be accomplished overnight. According to foreign media reports, Dr. Justin Chalker, currently from The Flinders University, came up with a solution to develop a polymer that can detect and absorb mercury contamination in water or soil.

Dr Chalker said that the new polymer itself is non-toxic and very inexpensive. The polymer is extracted from terpenes and sulfur. Terpene can be extracted from the common orange peel.

In addition, this polymer also has a discoloration function. The polymer was dark red when freshly extracted, but when the mercury compound was absorbed from the environment, the polymer turned bright yellow.

Mercury is a highly toxic substance that can cause great damage to the human nervous system. People suffer from mercury-contaminated fish. Mercury is easily absorbed into the human body, it is not easily degraded, and excretion is very slow. It is particularly easy to accumulate in the brain and is most toxic.

Due to their common and low-cost raw materials, the possibility of using such polymers on a large scale to detect or absorb mercury compounds is extremely high.
