Dow introduces a unique migration-free silicone slip agent

HC Plastics News: Dow DuPont Materials Science Business Unit's Dow High Performance Silicones Division launched the new Dow Corning® HMB-6301 masterbatch at the 2017 German Plastics Industry Show on October 17. This unique, patent-pending technology is based on the proven Dow Corning silicone technology platform, which provides long-lasting, stable smoothness without migration and can be added to biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film for improved Production and processing of packaging. This advanced silicone slip agent overcomes the key shortcomings of standard slip additives: including continuous precipitation from the surface of the film, and the slip properties decrease with time and temperature. Dow Corning® HMB-6301 masterbatch also enables BOPP film manufacturing by reducing the coefficient of friction (COF) to improve packaging productivity and achieving high quality and aesthetic packaging through superior printability and aluminizing properties. And users benefit.

Christophe Paulo, head of Dow's high-performance silicones global market, said: "When using BOPP film for packaging production (eg, molded cans), friction can have a negative impact on the appearance of the film, causing it to deform or even rupture, thus affecting Yield, this is a big problem. The new Dow Corning® HMB-6301 masterbatch not only solves this problem, but also protects customers from storage time and temperature constraints and reduces their concerns about additive migration. Help them maximize quality, consistency and productivity."

New technology overcomes traditional problems

Organic waxes such as erucamide have excellent slip properties and are widely used in BOPP films to improve packaging production. However, the organic wax is easily migrated continuously from the surface of the film, resulting in an increase in the haze of the transparent film, thereby affecting the appearance and quality of the packaging material. At the same time, if it migrates from the smooth layer to the corona layer during film winding and storage, it will have a negative impact on downstream operations such as printing. In addition, other deficiencies include: sensitivity to temperature increases, and slip performance decreases over time.

Unlike other slip additives, Dow Corning® HMB-6301 masterbatch needs to be added to the surface of the BOPP film. Because it is non-migratory, it does not transfer from the smooth layer to the corona layer, avoiding corona The effect of the surface tension of the layer ensures printability and aluminizing properties. At the same time, Dow's technology makes its stability independent of time and temperature, and excellent smoothness is maintained forever. In addition, the slip additive does not precipitate and does not significantly affect the optical properties of the transparent film.

Dow Corning® HMB-6301 masterbatch is specially added to BOPP and PP extruded films (mainly used in the production of food bags, packaging materials, packaging and bags), in line with EU food contact materials regulations and US FDA food contact standards, applicable The production line and the synchronous stretching line are successively stretched. The slip additive is available worldwide and is available in bulk form for easy processing.
