Scientists from Iowa State University in the United States have developed a new type of practical and transient battery. The speed of self-destruction has greatly improved on the basis of the original. This breakthrough makes it possible to develop self-destructive electronic devices.

Reza Montazami, materials scientist at Iowa State University, said that previous transient batteries were very limited in terms of power supply capacity, stability, and storage time, and the self-destruction was slow. Now, he and his colleagues developed this new self-destructive battery, which can supply power to desktop calculators for about 15 minutes. It will dissolve and disappear within 30 minutes of encountering water.
The concept verification project previously studied by Montazami, printed electronic components on a single layer of degradable polymer composites. The transient battery developed this time consists of 8 layers of circuit boards. The anode, cathode, and electrolyte are all sandwiched between two layers of polyvinyl alcohol.
The transient battery is about 1 mm thick, 5 mm long, and 6 mm wide, and can output 2.5V, which is more than twice that of other transient batteries. Its self-destruction speed is also 1000 times faster than the previous self-destruction battery. When the battery is immersed in water, the polymer material first expands, then the electrode cracks apart, and finally the entire battery is dissolved. The battery does not completely disappear and the nanoparticles in the battery material do not degrade, but when the electrodes break open and separate, the nanoparticles will spread out. Montazami refers to this technique as "physics and chemistry hybrid transients."
The Montazami team stated that if a larger battery is used to provide more power, the self-destruction time will be extended. For this reason, they suggest that multiple small battery combinations can be used when high battery power is required.
However, Montazami also said that the newly developed transient battery still faces the problems of low voltage, complex structure, difficult to manufacture transient voltage, and low success rate. "Transient batteries pose great challenges to materials, and there are not many teams doing similar research in the world."
