Scientists from the University of California, Los Angeles Samueli School of Engineering developed a perovskite-CIGS tandem solar cell with record efficiency.
The new thin-film solar cell is made by spraying a thin layer of perovskite on commercially available copper, indium, gallium, and selenide (CIGS) solar cells. The two layers are connected by a nanoscale interface designed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles. Their work was published in the "Science" magazine.
The US Department of Energy ’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory confirmed that the conversion efficiency was 22.4%.
The double-layer design improves the performance of existing CIGS solar cells by nearly 20%, because the CIGS base layer itself converts sunlight into energy with an efficiency of 18.7%.
According to the researchers, the technique of spraying the perovskite layer can be easily and inexpensively integrated into existing solar cell production processes. Their next goal is to make the efficiency of the series battery reach 30%.
