According to foreign media reports, the persistent high-altitude solar aircraft (PHASA-35) built by BAE Systems subsidiary Prismatic conducted the first fully integrated flight test over the Woomera test range of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The aircraft supported by the British Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and the Australian Defense Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) aircraft designed to fill the gap between aircraft and satellites.


According to BAE Systems, it completed the work from design to first test flight within 20 months, and built two full-size prototypes in 2019.

Compared with satellites, PHASA-35 is cheaper to build and operate, and it is also a durable, stable aerial platform with military and civilian applications including surveillance, communications, security, remote sensing, environmental science, forest fire detection, and maritime surveillance. In addition, PHASA-35 can fly to an altitude of 70,000 feet (21,000 meters), achieve a flight speed of 50-78 knots (93km / h-145km / h), and can fly upwind.
