According to foreign media New Atlas, some studies have found that plant-based bioplastics are more environmentally friendly than petroleum-based plastics. Now, scientists have created a transparent bioplastic film that not only blocks harmful ultraviolet radiation, but also has better airtightness than traditional plastics.
The transparent "copolymer" film created by a team at the University of Oulu, Finland, is made entirely of two organic compounds: hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. These are by-products of refining cellulose and hemicellulose – cellulose makes up the majority of plant cell walls, and hemicellulose with a simple structure is also present in these walls. By chemically linking HMF and furfural, the researchers were able to combine the structural characteristics of the two.
The final bioplastic can block most incident ultraviolet rays, and it is found that its airtightness is three to four times that of standard polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic film. This means that in other possible applications, it is particularly suitable as wrapping paper to protect food or other items from the harmful effects of sunlight, while also keeping these items fresh.
In addition, like most other bioplastics, this new material does not require the extraction and refining of petroleum and can be biodegraded once disposed.
Scientists recently published papers on the study in the journal "Macromolecules and Biomacromolecules".
