Stephanie Simmons, a material scientist at the University of Oxford, said: “This lifespan is at least ten times longer than previous experiments. Healthy and long-lived qubits are very helpful in proving the possibilities of quantum computers.”

However, they are not active and all qubits in the experiment are in the same quantum state. To perform the actual calculations, so that the quantum computer can really work, the qubits need to be in different quantum states.

It sounds complicated and difficult, yes, but the 39-minute survival of the qubits in the lab has been a huge step forward. The remaining problems will be solved by scientists.
