With the support of the Australian Solar Energy Research Institute, Professor Tim Schmidt of the School of Chemistry of the University of Sydney and the Helmholtz Material and Energy Center in Germany have developed a set of solar cells called “photochemical frequency increasing frequency conversionâ€. Prof. Schmidt said that the new process using frequency-enhanced frequency conversion technology can capture part of the solar spectrum that is not currently used in solar cells and avoid expensive solar cell redevelopment. This technology improves the efficiency of solar cells by forcing two weak red photons to combine to form a light-harvesting, energetic yellow photon that is then converted to electricity.
