New transparent electrical conductors can be stretched like rubber bands for applications such as flexible electronics

A research team led by Ren Zhifeng, a professor at the University of Houston in the United States and a well-known Chinese-American nanomaterials expert, recently developed a transparent electrical conductor that can be stretched like a rubber band without changing performance. This achievement is widely used in the fields of flexible electronics and human implantable devices.

According to a recent research paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ren Zhifeng team used the “nano grain boundary processing method” created by himself to prepare a metal mesh network structure with fishing net shape, bending and width control, and then attached it to A flexible substrate made of polydimethyl siloxane to form a transparent electrical conductor that is stretchable and has no fatigue properties.

Ren Zhifeng told the Xinhua News Agency that in the test, the electrical conductor achieved a four-fold stretch, and it also had the same electrical and transparent properties as the commercial indium tin oxide transparent conductive film. In general, the electrical conductor can remain substantially unchanged in resistance, light transmission and structure after stretching 2.5 times up to 50,000 cycles. "That is to say, the electrical conductor can be stretched like a rubber band and maintains good electrical conductivity and transparency."

Ren Zhifeng said that fatigue is a deadly enemy of metal materials. Usually, metal materials will break down after stretching for thousands of cycles under a small deformation (for example, 1%). Their stretchable transparent electrical conductors solve the fatigue problem. One reason is that the gold nano-networks of the electrical conductors themselves have good tensile properties, and they find that the adhesion between the metal network and its substrate is also adjusted. It can effectively improve the tensile properties and eliminate the strain fatigue problem.
