Nepal's ready-to-wear apparel industry requires duty-free access to the U.S. market

Nepalese ready-to-wear (RMG) exporters are striving to obtain tariff-free access to the U.S. market for 10 types of apparel and cashmere garments. They submitted a petition to the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) office asking the U.S. to allow these products to enjoy general preferential treatment. Product (GSP) treatment.

According to the U.S. system of the GSP, the series of goods registered at the U.S. Trade Representative Office can enter the U.S. market without tariffs, and the U.S. Trade Representative Office revise the tariff-free goods list every 10 years. This system mainly helps the most underdeveloped or developing countries to develop trade.

This year was the year for the adjustment of the GSP checklist. As a result, ready-made garment exporters took the opportunity to submit a petition to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative requesting the inclusion of 10 products made in Nepal.

Although there are 60 different clothing products in Nepal's export products, the Nepal Association only mentions the main products in the petition, such as men's and women's pants, shirts and shorts. In addition, Nepal also requested the inclusion of two cashmere products, and Nepal exports the two products to the world.

Exporters hope that the U.S. trade representative office can meet their requirements. They believe that if the U.S. allows their demands, the Nepalese apparel industry will see the dawn of new hope. Industry experts estimate that this preferential tool may directly help exporters double their exports to the United States. As a result, those machines that have stopped operating in the garment industry will once again gain vitality. At the same time, they will encourage new investments and create new jobs.
